SHAH ALAM, July 9 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government is allocating up to RM16 million annually to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), to empower the state’s youth, including those from the Indian community.
State executive councillor for Human Resources and Poverty Eradication, V. Papparaidu, said the allocation covers sponsorships at institutions such as the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), offering programmes under the Malaysian Skills Certificate, Professional Skills Certificate and Short-Term Skills Courses.
“Each year, the state government produces between 1,200 and 1,500 graduates from STDC across various fields, with equal opportunities offered to all eligible Selangor residents, including the Indian community, for training sponsorships at the centre.
“Records show that Indian youths form 30 to 40 percent of STDC applicants annually. This rising trend reflects growing support from families and inspiration from peers who have successfully completed their training at STDC,” he said.
He was responding to a question from Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim (PH–Kota Damansara) on the state government's plans to increase opportunities for Indian youth in the TVET sector, during the Selangor state assembly sitting today.
Papparaidu said that beyond sponsorships, the RM16 million allocation also supports TVET module development and the implementation of collaborative programmes with local and international institutions and industries.
“This effort aims to strengthen the TVET ecosystem and ensure institutions like STDC remain at the forefront, aligned with current technological advancements, so trainees are equipped to meet real-world industry demands.
“As such, all Selangorians, including Indian youth, can benefit from the various state-led initiatives,” he said.
He added that the state government has also allocated over RM15 million for programmes and initiatives specifically targeted at the Indian community.
This includes RM4.43 million for the Jom Shopping voucher programme in conjunction with this year’s Deepavali celebration, which is expected to benefit 22,150 Indian recipients from the B40 group.
