Abang Johari Calls On Kuching City Councils To Advance Digital Transformation

01/08/2025 03:09 PM

KUCHING, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government has urged Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) to adopt more technology-based approaches in developing the city, as part of its goal to make Sarawak the region’s leading digital economy by 2030.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the move is necessary to ensure Kuching remains relevant as a sustainable and inclusive smart city, guided by the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 (SDE 2030).

“DBKU and MBKS must be prepared for advances in the digital economy and technology, keeping pace with global developments,” he said in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at Kuching City Day’s 37th anniversary celebration here today.

He said Sarawak is on track to lead digital transformation under SDE 2030 through various initiatives, including investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and the expansion of cross-border data flows to draw digital investments.

He emphasised the role of local authorities, calling on DBKU and MBKS to support the Sarawak Sustainability Master Plan 2030, launched in May, to help build a low-carbon, climate-resilient state.

In line with this year’s theme, “Smart City of Unity, Embracing a Sustainable Future,” both councils have been urged to adapt their policies, service delivery and community engagement approaches to meet the demands of the digital era and climate change challenges.

“As a city administered by two local authorities, Kuching has its unique character and plays an important role in advancing the state’s development aspirations,” he said.

Also present at the event were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and Kuching North Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman.
