KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- The handover of 20 Cambodian soldiers detained by the Thai military after a recent armed clash is expected to be completed soon.
Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, who leads the ceasefire monitoring team, said the handover reflects Malaysia’s commitment to the ceasefire through coordination among the involved countries.
“The assistance that Cambodia requested is part of our duties as the monitoring team to ensure the ceasefire is upheld. I have also conveyed the request to the Thai authorities as a goodwill gesture aimed at fostering peace.
“Thailand has also extended good cooperation, and InsyaAllah, the process will be completed soon,” he told Bernama today when contacted.
He added that all Cambodian soldiers in Thai custody are treated well.
Bernama reported that Cambodia asked Malaysia, as coordinator and observer of the ceasefire, to help secure the release of its soldiers detained by the Thai military after the border conflict.
The Cambodian Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, Vong Pisen, has made a formal request for help to the Malaysian side.
The Ministry of National Defence spokesperson, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, said the Thai military has returned the body of one Cambodian soldier, while 20 remain in custody.
The armed confrontation ended at midnight on July 28 after an agreement reached during a special meeting Malaysia organised in Putrajaya.
