Anti-sugar Policy Implemented By Perak Effective Sept 1, 2025

IPOH, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Perak government has implemented the Anti-Sugar Policy effective Sept 1, marking a strategic step to safeguard public health, boost productivity, and build a healthier and more resilient generation in the state.

State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said the state government had approved the policy on Aug 27.

He said the policy aims to drive lifestyle changes among Perakians through three core measures, which are ‘community education and empowerment’, ‘supportive environment’, as well as ‘economic incentives and recognition’.

“A special Steering Committee will be established under my purview. This committee will oversee the implementation of the policy in phases beginning September 2025.

“The Anti-Sugar Policy reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening public health and the well-being of Perakians. With this proactive measure, Perak is poised to become a model for other states,” he said when met by reporters here today.

Sivanesan said Perak is the first state to implement such a policy, and the state government would also ensure follow-up actions to curb diabetes and obesity.

Previously, the War on Sugar campaign launched by the state government was among the initiatives taken to protect the people from illnesses linked to excessive sugar consumption.

Among the measures taken was to cut sugar use by 50 per cent in food and beverages served at all state government functions, including meetings.
