BALING, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- A group of Orang Asli dancers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Siong here stole the spotlight with their performance at the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) held at the Baling District Sports Complex today.

Adorned with decorations made from coconut leaves and wild grass, the six students delivered a captivating and distinctly unique Irama dan Tari Perpaduan Generasi MADANI performance.

Their accompanying teacher, Azizah Husain, said the group often attracted the audience’s attention and was frequently invited to perform at various programmes in the district.

“They are trained by teachers at school after morning classes. The dancers comprise students from Year Four to Year Six, including those in special education classes,” she told Bernama.

Azizah added that the group usually performs the Sewang dance, a traditional dance of the Orang Asli community in Malaysia.

One of the dancers, Year Four student Tasha Akon, said she was thrilled to perform before a large audience, which included senior government officials.

At first I felt scared seeing so many people, but once I got on stage, I felt okay,” she said.

Another student, Zuariana Hussin, 10, said she took great pleasure in dancing and that her group frequently trained with teachers after school hours.

A total of 56 students from 14 schools in the district were selected to perform the Irama dan Tari Perpaduan Generasi MADANI in conjunction with the Kedah PMR, which runs from today until Saturday.
