Stronger Legal Measures Needed To Fight Online Drug Threat - Lee Lam Thye

13/09/2025 10:57 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- The Alliance for a Safe Community has urged policymakers to amend the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (DDA) to combat the growing threat of online drug trafficking.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said drug syndicates were increasingly using online platforms, encrypted applications and social media to promote and sell drugs, often targeting youth.

“The DDA, enacted more than 70 years ago, is no longer sufficient to deal with these evolving methods. Strengthening the law is urgent to empower enforcement agencies with stronger tools, protect the young and vulnerable and close existing legal loopholes,” he said in a statement today.

He said clearer provisions would also strengthen enforcement and prosecution, enabling authorities to secure convictions against offenders.

“Drug abuse and trafficking remain one of the most serious threats to national security, public health and the well-being of families. It destroys lives, fuels crime and undermines society. The safety of our people, especially our youth, must be the nation’s top priority,” he added.
