High Tide: 18 Locations In Kedah Identified As At Risk Of Flooding

06/10/2025 03:34 PM

ALOR SETAR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) has identified 18 locations in the state as being at risk of flooding if the high tide phenomenon, expected to occur from tomorrow until Friday, coincides with heavy rainfall.

Its director Lt Col (PA) Mohd Bukhori Mat Sidik said the locations involved five districts, namely Kuala Muda, Kota Setar, Kubang Pasu, Yan and Langkawi.

“The weather has been fine with no rain over the past two or three days, improving the (flood) situation. Currently, there are only two temporary relief centres (PPS) open at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Langgar and Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena, housing 164 people from 51 families.

“However, a high tide is expected from tomorrow, and if it coincides with heavy rain, the flooding could worsen,” he told reporters after inspecting the flooded area at Taman Makam Diraja Langgar here today.

He said the villages in Kuala Muda that could be affected are Kampung Kepala Tanjung, Bukit Kechik, Tukang Jusoh, Paya, Sungai Meriam, Sungai Yu and Tanjung Dawai.

According to Mohd Bukhori, the areas in Kota Setar that are at risk of flooding are the Kuala Kedah Jetty, Seberang Kota Fishermen’s Jetty, Taman Sri Putra and Taman Sri Pantai, while in Kubang Pasu, they include Kampung Kuala Kerpan, Muara Kampung Kuala Jerlun and Muara Kampung Kuala Sanglang.

In Yan, the areas that might be hit by floods are Kampung Kuala Raga, Kuala Sala and Kuala Sungai Yan Kechil, while in Langkawi, it involves Kampung Bakau Kelibang, he said.

“High tide is expected at 12.45 am on Oct 7, 1.14 am on Oct 8, 1.45 am on Oct 9 and 2.18 am on Oct 10, with waves estimated to reach three metres. We hope the weather remains fine until the floods have fully receded,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Bukhori said that although the weather so far is expected to remain favourable, the Kedah APM is always on alert, with 900 personnel ready to be deployed.

“The public must stay alert to warnings from the authorities and changes in the weather, as well as ensure the safety of family members and important documents to avoid any inconvenience,” he said.
