06/10/2025 10:07 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Damansara Specialist Hospital, under the KPJ Healthcare group, marked Pink October 2025 with the launch of its newly renovated Oncology Daycare Unit (ODCU), as part of its efforts to enhance cancer care.

In a statement today, DSH said the launch, graced by Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, underscores another step in the hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve cancer treatment and raise awareness of early detection.

The ODCU provides a comprehensive range of therapies, including chemotherapy and targeted treatments such as hormone therapy, angiogenesis inhibitors, immunotherapy and monoclonal antibodies.

“It also offers bone-strengthening medication for patients with bone metastases, alongside palliative and supportive care that focuses on symptom management and quality of life.

“The upgraded facility now features a refreshed and calming environment with upgraded interiors and a dedicated treatment room for minor procedures. These enhancements reflect DSH’s commitment to ensuring patient comfort, privacy and holistic care,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan described the upgraded facilities at the ODCU as reflecting the group’s belief that quality cancer care extends beyond medical treatment.

“At DSH, we continue to enhance our services and collaborations so that more people can receive timely screening and treatment in a safe, supportive environment,” he said.

In the same statement, head of oncology at DSH Assoc Prof Dr Aminudin Rahman Mohd Mydin said that while breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, many cases are still diagnosed at a late stage.

“We are seeing more young women being diagnosed, including during pregnancy. Many are still detected at advanced stages, even though breast cancer is among the easiest to identify through screening. When found early, the survival rate is high, but once it spreads, treatment becomes more complex, costly and life-changing.

“At DSH, our multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and support staff work closely to ensure every patient receives care that is compassionate and empowering. With the upgraded Oncology Daycare Unit, we aim to provide a healing environment where patients and families can find strength and hope together,” he said.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Malaysian women, accounting for almost a third of all cases, and despite growing awareness, many patients are still diagnosed at a later stage.

The statement said that DSH will continue to play its part by improving access to early screening, multidisciplinary expertise and patient education initiatives that encourage early intervention.
