PUTRAJAYA, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has pledged to tighten monitoring and compliance with event guidelines and ethical standards following public backlash over the serving of alcohol at a recent official dinner event.

In a statement issued today, MOTAC expressed deep regret over the incident, which triggered widespread criticism and discomfort among the public.

“With a deep sense of responsibility and humility, the ministry sincerely regrets any confusion or misunderstanding that may have caused discomfort among Malaysians.

“MOTAC takes this incident as a valuable lesson and is committed to ensuring that such occurrences are not repeated. The ministry will ensure that all programmes under its purview strictly adhere to established guidelines and codes of conduct,” it said.

MOTAC also extended its appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his firm yet constructive criticism and continued support in strengthening the country’s tourism, arts, and cultural sectors.

“All conveniences are very much regretted. The ministry will take every necessary measure to strengthen communication and pursue continuous improvements in fulfilling its responsibilities to the people and the nation,” the statement read.

Earlier, the Prime Minister issued a stern warning to Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and MOTAC that the serving of alcohol at an official event must never be repeated, stressing that the government's policy clearly prohibits the serving of alcohol at official events regardless of whether the event is deemed to have “ended”.

The controversy stemmed from the Global Travel Meet dinner, where multiple photos from the event, showing the minister and guests holding glasses of wine and beer, went viral, sparking criticism over perceived disregard for official protocol and public sensitivities.
