KOTA BHARU, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Health Department has confirmed an increase in influenza cases in the state, with five clusters reported involving educational institutions, particularly boarding schools.
Its director, Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin, said while influenza is generally a mild illness that usually resolves within a week, the number of patients seeking treatment at clinics has shown a significant rise since epidemiological week 40.
“So far, there have been no hospital admissions or serious complications. However, the increase in clinic visits indicates active transmission within the community.
“The five identified clusters so far involve educational institutions, with a total of 514 cases recorded,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of the Kelantan-level ‘Malam’ Safe Lungs Operation under the full enforcement of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) at the Kota Bharu Control Branch last night.
Dr Zaini said all the clusters originated from boarding schools, and the decision to close the hostels lies under the jurisdiction of the State Education Department, which may do so if students’ health is affected.
He said an influenza cluster is defined as two or more cases with an epidemiological link, adding that although influenza is not listed as a notifiable disease, continuous monitoring is still being carried out.
“Individuals with symptoms are advised to wear face masks even though it is not mandatory, and to avoid public places or gatherings.
“Schools should also consistently monitor students’ health and educate parents on their role in preventing the spread of infection,” he said.
Dr Zaini added that if cases occur in schools, management should implement isolation and quarantine measures for symptomatic students.
“The situation remains under control, and no deaths have been reported. The health department is in constant communication with the State Education Department for further action,” he said.
