Sultan Nazrin To Officiate Two Taiping Landmarks Next Year - Nga

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has consented to officiate the Taiping Heritage Market and the Taiping Lake Garden landscape upgrading project in conjunction with his 70th birthday celebration next year.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced the matter after an audience with the Sultan today.

In a statement, Nga said reconstruction of the Taiping Market -- Malaysia’s first public market with a history spanning more than 140 years -- commenced in 2019 but was later halted following the discovery of severe termite damage in its original structure.

He said that upon his appointment as minister, an additional allocation of RM11.9 million was approved to resume the construction works.

“The Taiping Heritage Market is a historical landmark in the heritage town of Taiping, rich in cultural significance.

“Notably, 30 per cent of the building materials used comprise original 140-year-old timber that remains sturdy, to preserve the market’s authenticity and historical architecture,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nga also briefed Sultan Nazrin on Malaysia’s international achievements under the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).

Among them, Malaysia, represented by KPKT, was unanimously elected as president of the UN-Habitat General Assembly for the 2025-2029 term during a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 31.

“In recognition of our leadership in the circular economy, Malaysia will also receive the special highest award from the Zero Waste Foundation, under the auspices of the United Nations, on Oct 19 in Istanbul, Turkiye,” he said.

During the audience, Sultan Nazrin also consented to receive a special memento made from recycled materials by a local artist from the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) in conjunction with His Royal Highness’ 69th birthday celebration this November.
