JASIN, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- The daily 12-kilometre walk to and from work over the past five months has paid off for Muhammad Hasif Nasaruddin, 37, who emerged champion in the 2025 Melaka Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Biggest Loser Competition.
The victory was even more meaningful as his wife, Nur Khairul Nabila Kamaruddin, 37, won the women’s category after both adopted a disciplined exercise routine and healthy diet since May. Each took home RM1,500.
Before joining the programme, Muhammad Hasif weighed 122 kilogrammes (kg) and shed 27.3 kg to reach his current weight of 95.6 kg. His wife lost 15.6 kg, dropping from 84.3 kg to 68.7 kg.
“Every day at 7 am, I walk from my house in Ayer Keroh to my workplace in Batu Berendam, which is six kilometres away as additional exercise, besides brisk walking in the evenings,” he told Bernama today.
“When this competition was announced, I encouraged my wife to join me so that we could change our routine together. Alhamdulillah, with discipline and consistency, we achieved our goal,” he said.
Earlier, the couple received their prizes from state Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Committee chairman Datuk V. P. Shanmugam during the state-level National Sports Day 2025 celebration in Merlimau.
Meanwhile, Nur Khairul Nabila said the contest inspired her family to embrace a healthier lifestyle, making it a routine to walk 10,000 steps daily with their four children, aged two to 12, around their neighbourhood.
“We also eat healthier with home-cooked meals and avoid fast food. I make sure we have dinner before 7 pm. This programme is not just a contest, but a starting point for a healthy lifestyle and quality family time,” she said.
Melaka Youth and Sports Department (JBS) director Zailani Siran said the competition, held from May 4 to Sept 6, attracted 154 participants and involved eight intervention programmes, including physical training, aerobics, health talks and nutritional guidance.
He said the winners of the men’s and women’s categories each received RM1,500, followed by RM800 for second place and RM300 for third.
