Free Flu Shots For 12,500 Students In Selangor Following Influenza A Surge

17/10/2025 05:00 PM

SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government has allocated RM1 million to provide free Influenza A vaccinations to 12,500 students in the four high-risk districts of Hulu Langat, Gombak, Klang and Petaling.

The decision was made during today’s State Executive Council meeting, which also addressed the recent stabbing of a female student at a secondary school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya and a storm that hit Telok Panglima Garang, Banting.

“The free vaccination programme will start next week, led by State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin,” Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said in a statement.

Yesterday, North Klang police chief ACP S. Vijaya Rao confirmed an eight-year-old student from the Special Integrated Education Program (PPKI) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Meru, Klang, died early morning, suspected from Influenza A infection. The child’s entire family also tested positive for the virus.

On the stabbing, Amirudin acknowledged the trauma caused to students, especially witnesses and noted a decline in school attendance since the incident.

“To restore confidence and address trauma, the state government will hold meetings with parents, teachers and students to honour the victim,” he said.

Immediate measures include stricter student entry and exit registration, installation of metal detectors, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and a smart notification system involving parents and teachers.

Discussions will involve school parents, the District Education Office, the State Education Department, the Education Ministry, police and the Parent-Teacher Association.

Amirudin stressed such incidents must never recur and schools must remain safe havens for children.

The stabbing occurred around 9.30 am last Tuesday when a 16-year-old female student was fatally stabbed by a 14-year-old male student on school grounds in Bandar Utama.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the victim died from multiple stab wounds to the chest and neck inflicted by a knife.
