SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government is channelling aid of RM1,000 to 64 heads of families affected by the storm incident around Telok Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat, last Wednesday.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the allocation of disaster aid, totaling RM64,000, was decided at the State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting today.
He added that besides this, 14 residents, including one officer from the State Assembly (DUN) service centre who sustained injuries and are being treated in the hospital due to the storm, will also receive RM1,000 each.
"To repair the damage to the Kampung Medan Religious Primary School (SRA), the State Government has identified that the repair work will cost RM320,000, and this aid will be fully allocated under the State Disaster Fund so that students can return to school safely.
"This commitment is in addition to the initial aid already channeled by agencies under the state government, such as Yayasan MBI and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), that have disbursed RM564,000 to six schools, service centres, and the storm victims' families.
Yesterday, Amirudin was reported as saying that the storm incident was among the worst in the past four years, as such disasters usually occur in the northern area of Selangor, such as the rice fields of Sabak Bernam.
In the incident around 4.15 pm last Wednesday, a total of five schools, one hall, and approximately 40 houses were reported to have sustained damage.
Among the affected areas were Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sijangkang Jaya, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sijangkang Jaya, SK Kampung Medan, Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) Kampung Medan, SK Jalan Tanjung, Dewan Wawasan Batu 9, the Sijangkang DUN Coordinator's Office, the Batu 9 residential area, and the Taman Sijangkang Jaya industrial area.
Following this, a temporary relief centre (PPS) was activated to house 18 individuals from eight families in the aftermath of the storm that struck the Kampung Medan area, Kuala Langat, nearby.
