Selangor Has Managed To Eradicate Hardcore Poverty - Amirudin

KLANG, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Selangor State Government has successfully eradicated hardcore poverty in the state through proactive steps by immediately identifying those afflicted by this issue.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said he would be presented with a list of those involved every six months and they would continue to be connected with aid instruments such as the Selangor Sejahtera Living Assistance (Bingkas) and zakat (tithe).

"The state government has spent a lot to eradicate hardcore poverty, but from the beginning, we identified 700 individuals, and that has reduced to 300.

"... this involves financial aid where for those who need RM400, we top it up with zakat funds and aid from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for Muslims, while for non-Muslims, there is certainly aid from the State Government and JKM," he said when met after attending the Selangor State-Level Deepavali Celebration 2025 here today.

Amirudin said his administration's focus was now on ending poverty in Selangor through planned methods, which will be tabled in the Selangor Budget 2026.

He said the State Development Action Council Meeting found that there are nearly 2,000 individuals on the verge of hardcore poverty due to being bedridden or facing pressing problems.

"Even though these individuals have not yet fallen into the hardcore poverty category, we will try to help solve their problems so they do not fall into that category and also to exit poverty, which is why we will formulate something in the budget.

"The discipline is the same; every six months, we get a report, and we will move them out with existing aid support, and for the poor who are bedridden or unable to work, we will try to help before they fall into absolute poverty or at least enable them to sustain a basic living," he said.
