Abang Jo Urges Sarawak Local Authority Councillors To Embrace New Ideas

21/10/2025 06:37 PM

KUCHING, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Councillors of Local authorities (PBT) across Sarawak have been asked to be open to accepting new ideas and perspectives in addressing the challenges faced by today’s world.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that while basic infrastructure used to be sufficient for urban areas in the past, there are now other factors that must be considered, especially in urban planning.

Abang Johari, more popularly known as Abang Jo,  said elements such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should be prioritised by local councils to strike a balance between development and the environment.

“We need to adopt a different approach compared with the past. Previously, building good roads, electricity and water supply was enough, but times have changed.

“In the past, vehicle emissions were not seen as a major issue, but today, due to concerns such as greenhouse gas emissions, it has become a serious problem for us,” he said when speaking at the 2025 Seminar for Councillors of Local Authorities here today.
