KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia remains committed to supporting Thailand and Cambodia in their efforts to strengthen peace and stability along their border, in line with the spirit of mutual understanding and regional cooperation under the ASEAN framework.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin affirmed this in his official Instagram post after chairing the 2nd Special General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at Wisma Perwira ATM here on Thursday.
Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian National Defence Minister Tea Seiha led their respective delegations to the meeting.
“Malaysia hopes that the agreement reached today, as well as the ongoing peace process, will continue to be respected to ensure lasting peace along the border areas.
“Malaysia is proud to host and foster close relations with these two friendly nations, reflecting the country’s active role in promoting peace and stability across the ASEAN region,” Khaled said.
The two neighbours had held the first GBC in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia, on Sept 10.
Earlier, Bernama reported that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to expedite ongoing efforts to demarcate their shared land boundary, following a two-day Special Meeting of the Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC) held in Chanthaburi, the eastern province of Thailand, from Oct 21 to 22.
Thailand and Cambodia are working towards lasting peace along their 817-kilometre border, which has long been a source of disputes.
Tensions between them escalated into a military confrontation in the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear border areas on July 24 before both sides agreed to a ceasefire following Malaysia’s mediation efforts in Putrajaya on July 28.
