NIBONG TEBAL, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- The federal government has allocated RM7.95 million to implement the Sungai Kechil Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) to address recurring floods in the area, said Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
In a Facebook post today, he said the project, now 25 per cent complete, involves upgrading works on Sungai Kechil, Sungai Buaya 1 and Sungai Buaya 2.
“Improvements will also be made to two bridges at CH2300 and CH1700 to enhance water flow and road safety,” he added.
Zairil, who inspected the site today with Penang Drainage and Irrigation Department director Ooi Soon Lee, said flooding in the area is mainly caused by limited river capacity, tailwater conditions from Sungai Kerian and obstructions along the river.
He said the project, once completed, is expected to provide long-term benefits and greater protection for nearby residents.
