More Trees Needed in Cities Across Sarawak – Abang Johari

23/10/2025 08:54 PM

KUCHING, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- More trees should be planted in cities across Sarawak to help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in urban areas, says Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said that while many places around the world have to import trees for urban landscaping, Sarawak was blessed with an abundance of natural forest resources.

“In other places, they import trees. But for us, we have many trees in our forests that can be replanted within our cities. Once our cities become greener, these trees help absorb carbon through photosynthesis providing us with fresh air.

“In other words, cities should be planned in a way that maintains a balance between carbon emissions and oxygen production,” he said in his speech during the opening ceremony of the 11th International Conference on Low Carbon Asia (ICLCA) here today.

He added that city planning should also prioritise green recreational facilities and an efficient drainage system.
