Flood: Three More Relief Centres Opened In Kedah

ALOR SETAR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- A total of 206 people have been evacuated to three temporary relief centres in Kulim after several areas in the district were hit by floods yesterday evening.

The Kedah State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Secretariat said that the evacuees, from 66 families, are sheltering at relief centres at the Taman Sang Kancil Surau, Dewan Kampung Paya Tok Betok and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan China (SJKC) Khai Min.

“The Taman Sang Kancil Surau, which was opened at 11 pm, houses 88 victims; the Dewan Kampung Paya Tok Betok, opened at 10 pm, shelters 16 people; and the SJKC Khai Ming relief centre, opened at 11 pm, has 102 evacuees.

“The affected areas in Kulim following the four-hour non-stop downpour were Lunas, Sungai Ular and Karangan, which involved Kampung Seberang Sungai, Kampung Paya Tok Betok, Kampung Seberang Jaya, Kampung Kemunting and Kampung Banggol Penyengat,” it said in a statement today.

It also said that in Kuala Muda, 52 people from 24 families from Kampung Huma are still sheltering at the SJCK Chong Cheng relief centre, which has been opened since Wednesday (Oct 22). 

Meanwhile, the official Public Infobanjir website announced that two rivers in Kedah are at the danger level, namely Sungai Ketil in Baling (60.46 metres) and Sungai Pendang in Pendang (2.84 metres).

“Two other rivers, meanwhile, are at the alert level: Sungai Nawa, Pokok Sena (10.11 metres); and Sungai Chepir, Sik (36.28 metres). Four more rivers in the state are at the warning level, namely Sungai Ketil, Baling; Sungai Melaka, Langkawi; Sungai Serdang, Bandar Baharu; and Sungai Laka, Kubang Pasu,” it added.
