Trump's Presence Strengthens ASEAN-US Relations - PMO

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- The presence of United States President Donald Trump at the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits today further strengthens relations between ASEAN and the United States, marking a new chapter in both bilateral and regional cooperation.

In a statement issued through the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Daily Briefing, the Prime Minister’s Senior Press Secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said Trump’s official visit to Malaysia – his first since assuming office in January – provides an important opportunity for ASEAN to convey its collective stance on various regional and global issues.

“Trump’s presence offers ASEAN a vital platform to express its shared positions on issues such as peace, trade, energy, and the situation in the Asia-Pacific region and Gaza,” he said.

At the same time, Tunku Nashrul noted that one of today’s key highlights would be the signing ceremony of the Thailand–Cambodia Peace Agreement, to be witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Trump.

He said the event symbolises ASEAN’s success in advancing peaceful and constructive diplomacy to resolve disputes, reinforcing confidence in Malaysia’s role as a facilitator of regional peace.

Trump and Anwar are also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting, witness the signing of the agreement, and attend the 13th ASEAN-US Summit as well as a dinner with ASEAN leaders.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, held under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025 theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, will take place from tomorrow until Oct 28 and are expected to be among the largest gatherings in the regional organisation’s history.
