KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) has clarified that a document regarding an order prohibiting the use of smartphones by individuals under the age of 16, which has been circulating on the WhatsApp application, is fake.
According to JPM, it has never issued any statement regarding the matter.
"The public is advised to remain ethical and responsible by verifying the authenticity of any information before sharing it with others, to avoid confusion and misinformation,” it said in a statement, while also attaching the falsified document as a reference.
It said spreading false news or information is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
The fake document, with the JPM letterhead and dated Oct 20, among other things, states that starting Jan 1, 2026, all individuals under the age of 16 are completely prohibited from owning, using or accessing smartphones anywhere in Malaysia.
It also states that individuals or guardians who fail to comply with the order may be subject to action, including a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or community service at the discretion of the court or local authorities.
