Malaysia To Monitor Implementation Of ASEAN Agreements Closely - PM Anwar

28/10/2025 10:49 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said meaningful engagement with partners during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits must go beyond agreements on paper, stressing that Malaysia will closely monitor the implementation to ensure that the people benefit.

He said Malaysia would ensure the rakyat benefit from trade access and safeguard the country’s interests and autonomy.

“Our position will remain rooted in the principles of peace, prosperity and integrity, working with friends and neighbours.

“Together, we will chart a path that honours our traditions, embraces the future and serves the wellbeing of all Malaysians and the people of ASEAN,” he said in his offical social media post today.

Anwar also pointed out that United States President Donald Trump’s visit to Malaysia marks an important moment in reaffirming Putrajaya’s long-standing relations with Washington and the shared commitment to regional peace and prosperity.

“Our meeting was grounded in respect for our mutual interest, renewing trade dialogue, advancing supply-chain and critical-minerals cooperation and reaffirming ASEAN’s central role in shaping Asia-Pacific engagement,” he explained.

Trump is the third US president in history to visit Malaysia, after Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 and Barack Obama in 2014 and 2015.

As the rotating Chair of ASEAN, the Prime Minister said that the visit was seen not as an endorsement of any power bloc, but as a demonstration that Malaysia could serve as a neutral, dependable and effective partner.

“Bridging economies, facilitating dialogue and contributing to stability. The signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Cambodia and Thailand is a clear example of how our strategic diplomatic role adds value,” he said.

At the same time, Anwar also expressed his appreciation to Trump for his commitment to advancing the Gaza Peace Plan, which is hoped will help save Palestinian lives.

“My message is clear — Palestine must be safe, independent and sovereign.

“Malaysia remains steadfast in upholding universal humanitarian principles, advocating for just and lasting peace, strengthening ASEAN solidarity, and elevating Malaysia’s standing as a bridge towards a peaceful, prosperous and dignified world,” he added.
