SEPANG, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney departed for Singapore today after concluding his four-day working visit to Malaysia in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held in Kuala Lumpur.
The special aircraft carrying Carney departed from the Bunga Raya Complex of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 11.40 am following a red-carpet send-off, which included a guard of honour comprising 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.
Carney was given a send-off by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
Carney undertook the working visit, his first since assuming office in March, at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a bilateral meeting and to attend the ASEAN Summit as the Guest of the Chair.
On the sidelines of the Summit, Carney and Anwar also held a bilateral meeting, in which both leaders agreed to strengthen economic and investment ties, while exploring new opportunities in green energy, innovation and education towards inclusive and sustainable growth.
He also attended the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) panel session here on Sunday.
Also bidding farewell today after attending the ASEAN meetings was Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who departed at 2.05 pm.
Accompanied by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Premier Li inspected a guard of honour mounted by 28 officers from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment before departing via his special aircraft.
It was Premier Li’s second visit to Malaysia this year.
In his address at the 5th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Leaders’ Meeting on Monday, Premier Li reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening the alignment of development strategies with regional partners and promoting openness and cooperation to create a new chapter of growth and success in East Asia.
He said China remains determined to safeguard the multilateral trade system and stands ready to work with all parties to uphold true multilateralism.
Earlier today, ASEAN and China signed the upgraded ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0 (ACFTA 3.0), marking a new phase in bilateral trade relations between the regional bloc and the world’s second-largest economy.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Anwar and Premier Li.
Under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship’s theme of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, the 47th ASEAN Summit from Oct 26 to 28, brought together more than 3,000 delegates and leaders from over 30 countries and international organisations to enhance regional engagement and cooperation.
The ASEAN Summit and Related Summits concluded today.
