KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Monash University Malaysia (Monash University) will partner with TRX City to deliver its RM2.8 billion local investment into a future Monash campus in Kuala Lumpur.

Monash University’s vice-chancellor and president Professor Sharon Pickering is scheduled to announce the future Monash Malaysia Campus in Kuala Lumpur, alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

The university, in a statement, said the new campus is scheduled to open in 2032 and will accommodate up to 22,500 students and 1,700 staff by 2040, complementing the existing campus in Subang Jaya.

Over 35 extra courses will be offered at the campus in priority fields vital to Malaysia and the future global workforce, such as digitisation, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, climate change and sustainability, healthcare and digital health, semiconductor and advanced manufacturing, banking and finance.

Albanese, as quoted in the statement, said showcasing Australia’s best-in-class higher education sector overseas is a huge opportunity for Australian jobs and investment.

“But it is also an important opportunity to extend deep connections in our region and right around the world. That is exactly what we are seeing with this investment from Monash for a new campus in Malaysia: students learning from one of Australia’s leading international universities right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

TRX City chief executive officer Datuk Azmar Talib said the collaboration will strengthen Malaysia’s competitiveness and human capital development.

“Our partnership with Monash University strengthens Malaysia’s competitiveness and connectivity with ASEAN through talent development. Monash University Malaysia’s city campus will enrich TRX’s diverse community and nurture the next generation of global thinkers,” he said.

Monash University works closely with partners in ASEAN -- including its campus in Indonesia, and across Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam -- and contributes to the objectives of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030.

Monash University is a globally connected institution with a distinctive presence across the Indo-Pacific, uniting campuses and communities through a powerful network of nearly 60,000 ASEAN alumni.

Established in 1998 as Malaysia’s first foreign university campus, Monash University Malaysia is now the university’s largest and most successful international campus. The upcoming Kuala Lumpur campus will be developed in addition to the Subang Jaya campus, with all current programmes and services continuing as usual.

This financial commitment comes from Monash University Malaysia, built on its outstanding success over almost 30 years and supported by Monash University Australia.

From its inaugural cohort of 417 in 1998, Monash University Malaysia now hosts more than 11,000 students from over 80 countries, with increasing demand for a top-40-ranked university education.
