ASEAN 2025: Malaysia Sets New Benchmark In Managing Regional And Economic Issues

28/10/2025 08:16 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair for 2025, has set a new benchmark in managing regional affairs and enhancing the region’s economic appeal, thereby bolstering international investor confidence in the country.

Prime Minister’s senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said Malaysia’s leadership during its chairmanship has reflected the nation’s maturity, strategic foresight and structured approach in addressing regional challenges.

“The Prime Minister has demonstrated strong commitment in leading ASEAN, despite facing various challenges both domestically and internationally. His leadership has not only focused on political and humanitarian matters, but also placed equal emphasis on advancing regional economic development,” he told Bernama on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits here today.

Among the key initiatives highlighted by Malaysia is the proposal to establish an ASEAN Power Grid, which is expected to bring significant benefits to member states while strengthening regional energy resilience.

“This move shows that Malaysia is far-sighted and understands the importance of regional economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of the people of ASEAN,” he said.

Shamsul Iskandar said Malaysia’s role in addressing the humanitarian situation in Myanmar and helping to ease tensions between Cambodia and Thailand has further strengthened the country’s image as a credible and responsible regional leader.

“Malaysia’s efforts to deploy aid teams and construct hospitals in Myanmar stand as clear evidence of the humanitarian diplomacy approach championed by the country,” he said.

Apart from its success at the regional level, Shamsul Iskandar said Malaysia’s chairmanship has also had a direct positive impact on the domestic economy, boosting foreign investor confidence - particularly in the data centre and digital technology sectors.

“Malaysia is now regarded as a strategic partner by major world powers, including the United States, China, Russia and Arab nations. The presence of these global leaders in Kuala Lumpur during this period underscores Malaysia’s position as a key focal point in the region,” he said.
