Floods In Kedah And Perak Subsiding

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The flood situation in Kedah and Perak continues to improve with the number of victims being evacuated to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) dropping as of 8 pm tonight.

In KEDAH, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) announced that 579 victims from 156 families were still being housed in four PPS, down from 698 people from 198 families this morning.

"Pendang District recorded the highest number of victims with 503 people from 136 families in three PPS, while in Kota Setar, 76 people from 20 families were still taking shelter in one PPS," according to a JPBN statement here tonight.

The PPS in the Pokok Sena district, which had been operating since Oct 25, was completely closed at 10 am this morning after all victims were allowed to return to their homes.

Meanwhile, in PERAK, the state JPBN secretariat reported that the number of flood victims in the Manjung district has decreased to 129 people from 30 families and all of them have taken shelter at the PPS Sekolah Agama Rakyat Padang Serai, Pantai Remis.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) informed that the water level of Kinta River in the Kinta district is at the warning level, which is as high as 248.16 metres (m) compared to the normal level of 243.50 m.
