SHAH ALAM, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) continues to strengthen its position as one of the most progressive local authorities (PBT) by introducing an advanced closed-circuit television (CCTV) system innovation known as IRIS.
Shah Alam Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said the technology, which utilises solar energy, will help make Shah Alam a safer, more sustainable and efficient city in line with current security needs.
“With this technology, we can enhance safety control across the city, particularly in high-risk areas, while the use of solar energy aligns with MBSA’s policy towards a green and low-carbon city.
“IRIS not only saves energy but also expands surveillance capabilities in areas without access to electricity,” he told Bernama at the Selangor Innovation Appreciation Ceremony 2025 here today.
The event was officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and attended by State Executive Councillor for Islamic Affairs and Innovation Culture Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah as well as Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzil Ahmad.
Mohd Fauzi said the use of solar energy for the surveillance system offers great value to the community as it can function effectively in remote areas while supporting MBSA’s green city agenda.
He added that MBSA plans to expand the use of IRIS across its administrative area by next year, as part of efforts to achieve full utilisation of renewable energy in city monitoring operations.
“MBSA will focus on realising ‘Smart City Shah Alam’ by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its security and traffic management systems.
“AI will help detect suspicious activities and manage traffic flow more efficiently without relying entirely on officers on the ground,” he explained.
Mohd Fauzi said the AI-based system has been developed in stages over the past four years and is now being tested to strengthen public safety monitoring, including disaster management such as flood control.
He said the integrated surveillance technology not only improves MBSA’s response efficiency to incidents but also reduces operational costs as officers no longer need to be physically present at all times.
“This innovation enables us to monitor flood-prone areas more quickly and accurately. When the system detects rising water levels, early warnings can be sent immediately to residents and response teams.
“It speeds up the detection process, complaint management and information dissemination to the public. The IRIS and AI systems truly make an impact in our efforts to make Shah Alam a safe and efficient city,” he said.
Earlier, IRIS was named the overall winner in the Social Innovation and Best Innovation Project categories at the 2025 Selangor Public Service Innovation Persada (MPIPANS) ceremony, presented by Amirudin.
