UPM Sarawak Marks Historic First Convocation Since Rebranding, Celebrates 556 Graduates

KUCHING, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- The first session of the 49th Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Convocation marked a historic milestone as 556 graduates were celebrated at Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS) today, the first convocation since the campus was rebranded last June.

According to UPM in a statement today, the two-day ceremony at Dewan Sri Kenyalang was officiated by UPM Pro-Chancellor Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, who also presented the scrolls to the graduates.

This year’s convocation produced the inaugural batch of graduates from two new programmes, the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry with Honours and the Diploma in Business Management, reflecting the university’s academic growth and diversification.

In addition, the Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad Co-Curricular and Student Development Gold Medal was introduced to honour outstanding graduates in leadership and co-curricular excellence.

The rebranding of the UPM Bintulu Campus to UPMS on June 30 represents a strategic move to enhance the university’s strengths in agriculture, animal science, and research, aligning with Sarawak’s 2030 development aspirations.

Among the key initiatives are the establishment of the School of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, the AgriHub@Gedong rice cultivation transformation project, and the Universitas Borneo University Consortium, which reinforces collaboration between UPMS and the Sarawak government in advancing a globally impactful higher education and research ecosystem.
