JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) will coordinate with Ranhill SAJ to ensure water supply through tankers to schools afftected by pollution of Sungai Johor in the event of water disruption tomorrow.

Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the move is to ensure that teaching and learning (PdP) activities can continue without affecting the comfort of pupils and teachers.

“All schools in the state will operate as usual tomorrow,” he said when contacted by Bernama for comments on whether schools in the state would remain open if water supply disruptions occur.

A total of 455,757 account holders, or nearly 1.8 million residents in Johor, were affected in stages by the pollution incident that occurred last Friday, with 54 per cent of the supply having been restored so far.

Yesterday, Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh was reported as saying that a sand-washing pond at a land sand-mining site in the Kota Tinggi district had burst.

He said the incident was caused by soil movement that led to the rupture of the sixth sand-washing pond belonging to a local company, contaminating the Johor River.

As a result, the turbidity level of raw water in the Johor River Basin recorded an extraordinary increase to 37,400 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), compared to the normal level of around 400 NTU.
