SIBU, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The road upgrading project for Jalan Pulau Dudong in Sibu has entered the tender stage, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman, said the plan was first discussed with the Public Works Department (JKR) at the end of 2022, received approval in 2023, before being followed by the preparation of design drawings.
“The project is expected to begin next year and take two years to complete. I thank JKR for its review and approval and urge the relevant authorities to expedite the construction process once tendering is completed,” he said in a statement today.
Tiong said the 7.5-kilometre road, which has experienced flooding of up to 3.34 metres, will be raised to a minimum height of 3.88 metres, with sections in severe flood zones reaching up to 14 metres.
The project aims to resolve long-standing flood and road subsidence issues, improving safety and connectivity between Jalan Salim/Jalan Stabau and the road leading to Sibu Airport.
The minister said that the improved route would benefit more than 300 residents from several longhouses along the stretch by enhancing travel convenience, reducing flood risks, and promoting local economic growth.
“I hope the project can start soon so residents may enjoy a safer and more comfortable road without further delay,” he said.
