52,526 Have Undergone Health Screening Under NHSI Initiative In Melaka

MELAKA, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- A total of 76 per cent or 52,526 of individuals aged 18 and above have undergone free health screenings under the National Health Screening Initiative’s (NHSI) target in Melaka this year.

State Health director Dr Ruzita Mustaffa said the the initiative aimed at encouraging the public to undergo early health screening to detect non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

“Based on available statistics, residents in the Alor Gajah district recorded the highest participation with 83 per cent or 14,663 people, followed by Jasin (75 per cent or 7,449 people) and Melaka Tengah (70 per cent or 36,167 people).

“The screenings can be carried out at all nearby health clinics as well as health counters opened during outreach programmes organised by the state Health Department or events hosted by other organisers,” she told reporters here today.

She said this after officiating the state-level 2025 World Diabetes Day celebration, launched by State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem.

Dr Ruzita said NHSI had entered its third year of implementation and achievements in the past two years showed that the number of screenings conducted exceeded the set targets, reflecting a high level of awareness of early health checks.

She said that this year, the screenings were open to all individuals aged 18 and above, compared with the previous two years when they were limited to those aged 35 and above.

“Based on recent health trends, many young individuals aged between 18 and 29 have health issues such as diabetes and hypertension, but they are unaware of it until they undergo health screenings,” she said.
