19/11/2025 09:38 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- The Transport Ministry (MOT) has set up two special task forces to investigate the container explosion at Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor and the runaway commuter train incident at Butterworth Station in Penang.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the decision was made at the ministry’s post-Cabinet meeting today to ensure transparent and independent investigations.

He said the meeting also reviewed the recent rainwater overflow incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.

“The container explosion on board MV Kyparissia during unloading on Nov 7 resulted in three deaths and three injuries. The task force will examine operational procedures, safety compliance and the handling of hazardous cargo.

“On Nov 8, an empty commuter train overshot the end of the track at Platform 4, Butterworth Station. The task force will identify the cause and recommend improvements to prevent a repeat,” he said in a statement.

Loke said the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has been directed to initiate an investigation paper on the train driver and take follow-up action upon completion of the probe.

On the KLIA Terminal 1 incident, Loke said the overflow occurred while waterproofing works were being carried out by Teras Budi Resources Sdn Bhd under a RM5.27 million contract running from April 15 this year to April 14, 2026.

He said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has issued a stop-work order to enable an internal investigation and immediate rectification works, adding that firm action will be taken against the contractor for negligence.

Loke emphasised that safety and operational integrity remain MOT’s top priorities and reminded all transport operators to comply fully with safety procedures and ensure continuous maintenance and monitoring.

He said MOT will provide further updates on both task force investigations in due course.
