Malaysia Solidifies Leadership In Advancing ASEAN Climate Collaboration At COP30

20/11/2025 03:03 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- At COP30 in Brazil, Malaysia is solidifying its leadership in advancing regional climate collaboration for ASEAN at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), in Belém, Brazil.

Its priorities are establishing harmonised carbon markets, strengthening nature-based solutions, and protecting transboundary ecosystems as the ASEAN Chairmanship passes to the Philippines.

A Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) statement today said that building on its 2025 chairmanship, Malaysia's efforts at COP30 are crucial for ensuring regional cooperation translates climate ambition into measurable outcomes for Southeast Asia.

The strong opening week at the Malaysia Pavilion featured dialogues on ecosystem restoration, climate-resilience financing and public-private partnerships that connect national priorities with broader regional objectives.

“These engagements demonstrate Malaysia’s growing role in convening diverse stakeholders, with the Pavilion emerging as a platform that shapes ASEAN’s collective climate direction,” the ministry said.

As COP30 enters its second week, Malaysia is shifting its focus towards implementation, reflecting just transitions, nature-based solutions and sustainable financing as key drivers of regional climate action.

The Pavilion continues to gather government, industry, academia, civil society and youth under the theme ‘Climate Action Now: Net Zero Pathways Unlocked’, providing space for exchange of knowledge and collaborative planning.

Malaysia’s updated climate target aligns with its Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy (LTLEDS), the 13th Malaysia Plan and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), reinforcing its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

This week, the Malaysia Pavilion will host networking sessions, project presentations and fireside chats involving government agencies, private-sector partners and international organisations, with implementation taking centre stage.

In the same statement, NRES Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the theme reflects Malaysia's ongoing initiatives, such as renewable energy expansion, nature-based solutions and sustainable urban development.

He added that these efforts demonstrate the country's commitment to delivering lasting sustainability impact for its people and the planet.

He said Malaysia’s approach at COP30 remains consistent in embedding sustainability across national development through collaboration, knowledge-sharing and community empowerment.

COP30 is taking place from Nov 10 to Nov 21.
