KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- MIMOS Berhad, the national applied research and development (R&D) centre under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has made history as the first organisation in Malaysia and among the pioneers in Asia Pacific to receive the ISO 56001:2024 Innovation Management System (IMS) Certification, a recognised global standard for excellence in continuous innovation management.
The certification was officially presented to MIMOS group president and chief executive officer Dr Saat Shukri Embong by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, in conjunction with the SIRIM Industry 2025 Council held here yesterday.
MIMOS in a statement today announced that the ISO 56001:2024 certification institutionalises international standards that recognise and validate MIMOS' innovation process as a governance-based and potential-oriented system.
The standards also strengthen how MIMOS identifies, evaluates and manages opportunities along the R-D-C-I (Research-Development-Commercialization-Impact) chain, ensuring that every idea is goal-focused, every initiative is accountable and every outcome contributes to the nation's innovation priorities.
“This ISO 56001-certified IMS positions MIMOS as a national reference model in public sector innovation management. It provides evidence-based assurance that R&D outcomes are aligned with the country’s long-term development goals and contribute to tangible socio-economic returns.
“More importantly, this certification paves the way for cross-border innovation collaboration, particularly with organisations in Europe and Asia that have adopted the ISO 56000 series of standards. With this alignment, MIMOS strengthens Malaysia’s position in the global innovation ecosystem and increases international confidence in the country’s ability to be a trusted innovation partner,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Saat Shukri said the certification demonstrates MIMOS’ commitment to operational excellence, innovation governance, and national impact creation and sets a new benchmark for Malaysia to systematically manage innovation from research to actual implementation.
“We developed the MIMOS Innovation Management System (MiMS) to ensure that innovation is not left to chance, but is instead driven by governance, intelligence opportunities, and measurable results, to strengthen Malaysia's competitiveness globally," he said in the same statement.
The statement informed that through ISO 56001, MIMOS is implementing a Technology Release and Commercialisation Framework to accelerate the application of research results into the industry.
According to MIMOS, each technology will undergo a comprehensive readiness and risk assessment, ensuring faster adoption by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), government agencies and strategic industries.
"With this certification, MIMOS has emerged as a trusted national innovation driver, connecting innovation excellence with real impact on the people and the national economy," according to the statement.
