Gov't Enhancing Syariah-compliant Entertainment, Sports Platforms - Zulkifli

20/11/2025 11:22 PM

MARANG, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Efforts to provide entertainment and sports platforms aligned with Islamic principles continue to be enhanced to ensure the community, especially youth, can enjoy wholesome entertainment and meaningful sporting activities, says Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

He said such efforts were important to attract the younger generation to programmes centred on noble values and guidance aligned with Islamic teachings.

“What we are doing is providing platforms that are suitable and aligned with the demands of syariah — forms of good entertainment and sports that are beneficial. We have also featured positive sports icons such as Sonny Bill Williams (former All Blacks rugby star) and Khabib Nurmagomedov (former UFC lightweight world champion), as well as an artistic figure who serves as a role model, namely Yusuf Islam or Cat Stevens.

“This is aimed at drawing the interest of young people. In Islam, arts and entertainment are permitted while sports are encouraged, but all have their proper guidelines.

“So this is what we are striving for so that all segments of society, especially the youth, can participate with proper guidance and direction,” he said when met by reporters after the Islamic Arts Festival and national-level National Da’wah Programme 2025 at Asrama Darul Falah Bukit Payong here today.

Zulkifli said the government was examining these aspects by organising various entertainment and sports programmes in line with syariah principles.

“Many programmes have been implemented such as the ‘Subuh Macam Jumaat’ campaign with Sonny Bill Williams, the engagement with Khabib and others, all of which received very positive response,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli said the three-day festival, which began today, successfully gathered more than 900 participants comprising pupils, secondary school students and university students from across the country.

He said various events were held including oratory, poetry recitation, tilawah, azan rendition, nasyid and other segments aimed at enriching Islamic arts and showcasing young talent.

“The festival received very encouraging response, reflecting strong public interest in syariah-based arts platforms.

“The main message of this programme is to revitalise Islamic arts through sound approaches aligned with religious principles and capable of attracting greater youth participation,” he said.
