Silat In Cemetery: Probe Must Be Conducted Comprehensively - Mohd Na’im

23/11/2025 08:38 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- The investigation into the viral incident involving a man performing silat at a cemetery in Johor should take into account the individual’s welfare and safety, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said.

He said the man’s actions had understandably raised questions and concern among the public, particularly regarding decorum and sensitivities at burial grounds.

He said cemeteries are not places for acts that could cause misunderstanding, disturb the peace, or offend bereaved families.

“However, at the same time, we must respond with care and empathy. It is possible that the individual may be in need of psychosocial support or intervention from the authorities or his family,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Na’im welcomed the swift action by Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid, who directed the Kluang District Kadi Office to investigate the matter.

“This approach is important to ensure there are no elements that contravene decorum, Islamic law or public order, and to gain a clear understanding of the individual’s circumstances,” he said.

Mohd Na’im urged the public not to engage in excessive speculation and place full trust in the state Islamic authorities to handle the matter.

He said they would continue to work with the Johor government and the Johor Islamic Religious Department to ensure the incident is handled with prudence and sensitivity, in the spirit of Malaysia MADANI and for the well-being of all.

Yesterday, the media reported that the state government had instructed the Kluang Kadi Office to investigate a viral video showing a man making silat-like movements at a Muslim cemetery, to ensure no actions contrary to proper decorum had taken place.

Previously, a 28-second video circulated on Facebook, recorded by a passerby, showing a man wearing a jacket and helmet standing in a cemetery while performing a series of hand and foot movements.
