Probe Under Way After Menumbok-Labuan Passenger Boat Fire

LABUAN, Dec 8 (Bernama) -- The Labuan Marine Department has launched an investigation into the fire incident involving a passenger speed boat travelling from Menumbok to Labuan on Thursday.

A total of 38 passengers, including two infants and senior citizens, were on board at the time of the incident.

Labuan Marine Department director Alimuddin Amiruddin said a comprehensive investigation began immediately after the incident to determine the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in future.

He said a special investigation committee has also been set up to examine safety compliance, the boat’s maintenance records, emergency procedures and other operational aspects.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation covering all technical and operational elements to identify the cause of the incident.

“Statements from passengers and the boat operator will be taken to complete the investigation report,” he said when contacted today. He added that the vessel operator would be called in to provide statements and submit relevant operational and maintenance documents.

The boat, en route to Labuan, was forced to head to shore at Pantai Mawilla after a fire broke out, allowing passengers to be evacuated safely.

He said a crew member sustained minor injuries, adding that no passengers were hurt, although most personal belongings were destroyed.

Alimuddin stressed that passenger safety is the department’s top priority, and appropriate action would be taken if there are breaches of safety regulations.

He also reminded all passenger boat operators to ensure proper vessel maintenance and conduct regular emergency drills to prevent similar incidents in the future.
