PIDBR 2025 Draws Over 1,600 Athletes From 12 Countries At Straits Quay

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) 2025 returned to Straits Quay Retail Marina with strong international participation, drawing more than 1,600 athletes from 12 countries and reinforcing Penang’s position as a global sporting destination.

Held from Nov 29 to 30, the regatta marked its second consecutive year at the waterfront enclave and continued to attract strong turnout from both participants and spectators.

This year’s edition also introduced a para-athlete category featuring three groups, expanding inclusivity in the long-standing paddling tradition.

In a statement today, Eastern & Oriental Bhd (E&O), the host venue partner, said the event drew more than 100,000 spectators and participants, reflecting strong international interest. 

The competition featured 250m and 400m races alongside junior, senior and international open categories, creating a festive atmosphere as teams competed against the backdrop of Straits Quay’s deep-water marina and promenade.

E&O executive chairman Datuk Seri Tee Eng Ho said the regatta’s spirit of teamwork and unity reflected the company’s ongoing efforts to build vibrant and inclusive spaces through its developments in Penang.

“With Straits Quay and Andaman Island progressing steadily, we are proud to support a festival that not only energises our waterfront but strengthens Penang’s standing as a premier destination for sport, culture and community,” he said.

E&O said preparations are also underway for two events on Dec 12 -- the opening of Gurney Bridge and Andaman’s festive market featuring local vendors and community stalls.
