BACHOK, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- Safety improvement works at the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) campus, including the installation of safety guardrails and streetlights in identified locations, are expected to be completed in the near future, said UMK Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Arham Abdullah.
He said that the guardrail installation involves identified main routes, particularly in hilly areas within the campus and the installation has been approved and implementation is currently underway.
“Streetlights will also be installed in identified areas to ensure a safer campus environment, especially at night,” he told Bernama recently.
Arham added that road upgrading works in the affected areas have been completed, with the project handover scheduled for the middle of this month, followed by the full completion of additional safety works.
He said these improvement measures are part of the university's continuous efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and the campus community are always guaranteed.
The media previously reported that an UMK Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student died while his friend was injured after the Perodua Axia they were in skidded and plunged into a lake at the UMK Jeli Campus at approximately 6:20 pm. The victim, Muhammad Amidee Abdullah, 25, died at the scene, while his friend managed to save himself.
Meanwhile, commenting on the university's direction, he said UMK is currently implementing the UMK 2025-2030 Strategic Plan (UMK30). Framed for a five-year period, the plan emphasises safety and sustainability elements across the university’s 10 faculties.
“UMK will also celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, and various programmes have been planned to achieve the university’s objectives and vision,” he said.
Regarding the graduate employability rate, Arham stated that in 2024, UMK recorded 67.3 percent of graduates securing employment or pursuing further studies, while the latest data is expected to be available this March.
