IPOH, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim said the proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to a maximum of 10 years, or two terms, would not harm the country.
He said that a leader could continue to play a role and contribute to the country in various other capacities.
“We must view this from a positive perspective. Even if a Prime Minister does not serve for a longer period, there are other roles or functions which can be considered, subject to existing policies and the country’s capacity to develop and organise leadership,” said Muhammad Kamil, who is also the political secretary to the Minister of Finance.
He said this after attending the 2026 Back-to-School programme under the Sejahtera MADANI initiative, organised by the Perak State Development Office and the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department (ICU JPM), in strategic collaboration with Pasaraya Borong Sakan Sdn Bhd, here, today.
Previously, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, reportedly said that imposing a term limit could be detrimental to the country, particularly if leaders appointed at a young age proved to be capable, but were unable to be reappointed due to such constraints.
Muhammad Kamil acknowledged that the proposal had its advantages and disadvantages but stressed that it should not hinder the introduction of new and fresh political changes in the country.
Meanwhile, he expressed his appreciation to UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, for his stance in maintaining and continuing to strengthen the country’s political stability.
“This differs from the leadership of a small group, who speak emotionally, lack sound and long-term judgment, and place personal or party interests above the interests of the country,” he said.
Yesterday, Ahmad Zahid reportedly said that UMNO would not carry out a ‘tebuk atap’ move against the existing government and would remain part of the Unity Government until the end of its term, ahead of the 16th General Election.
Muhammad Kamil also urged all parties within the Unity Government to refrain from internal disputes and instead focus on serving the people.
