Flood Situation Improves In Sarawak, Evacuees Rise Slightly In Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- The flood situation in Sarawak is reported to be improving, while Sabah has recorded a slight increase in the number of evacuees as of 8 am today.

In Sarawak, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said the number of flood victims housed at the temporary evacuation centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bekenu in Miri had dropped to 135 people from 46 families, compared with 185 people from 54 families at 4 pm yesterday.

In Sabah, the number of flood victims in the districts of Beaufort and Tenom rose slightly to 1,224 people from 433 families as of 8 am today, compared with 1,206 people from 425 families at 4 pm yesterday.

The Sabah JPBN Secretariat said the floods affected residents in 14 villages — nine in Beaufort and five in Tenom.

In a statement, it said Beaufort recorded 661 victims from 223 families, while 563 people from 210 families were affected in Tenom.

A total of eight temporary evacuation centres and one permanent evacuation centre are operating in both districts to accommodate all affected victims.
