SERDANG, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- The government’s move to review the implementation of the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) examinations will be carried out through a comprehensive and carefully considered process involving various stakeholders, rather than in haste.
Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said that the review on the proposed reinstatement of the examinations will be carried out following requests from various parties, including parents, teachers and the wider education community.
“We have not implemented it yet. At this stage, we are only reviewing the proposal, as there are differing views - some want the examinations reinstated, while others feel they are unnecessary.
“Therefore, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek made a prudent decision to review whether there is a need to reinstate the examinations,” he told reporters after attending the first day of the 2026 school session at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Serdang here today.
He added that the National Education Advisory Council (MPPK) has yet to determine the parties that will be involved in the study.
He also expressed hope that the parties involved in the study would put forward recommendations based on accurate knowledge and a sound understanding of the education system, so that students are not treated as ‘laboratory subjects’.
Mohd Azam also gave assurance that if the examinations are reinstated, the format will be reviewed by the Curriculum Development Division in collaboration with the Malaysian Examinations Board to ensure student assessments are conducted holistically and aligned with current educational needs.
Meanwhile, commenting on school safety, he said that the police work closely with school management and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to conduct regular monitoring through patrols and surveillance.
He added that the measures are aimed at ensuring a safer and more conducive school environment, enabling students to focus fully on their studies.
