KINABATANGAN, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- Early voting for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections ended at 5pm today, involving 189 police personnel at the district police headquarters (IPD) from 8am.
As of 3pm, the Election Commission (EC) reported 89.42 per cent of registered voters in Kinabatangan and 89.89 per cent in Lamag had cast their ballots, with early voting proceeding smoothly under good weather.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlah Harun, along with Lamag candidates Mohd Ismail Ayob (Barisan Nasional) and Mazliwati Abdul Malek (Warisan), observed the proceedings. Kinabatangan police chief Supt Ravi Duraisamy said early voting ran smoothly.
The Kinabatangan contest features a three-way fight between Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar (BN), Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman (Warisan) and Goldam Hamid (Independent), while Lamag is a straight contest between Mohd Ismail and Mazliwati.
The by-elections follow the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year. Kinabatangan has 48,722 registered voters, while Lamag has 13,899.
A total of 36 polling centres with 117 streams will operate on Saturday. Polling hours are generally 7.30am – 5.30pm, except for 25 centres in Lamag, Kuamut and Sukau, which will operate from 12 noon to 5pm.
The official vote-counting centre for both by-elections is Dewan Sri Lamag.
