BESS Development Should Be Done In Stages At Strategic Locations, Dewan Rakyat Told

27/01/2026 08:42 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Battery energy storage system (BESS) development should be carried out in stages at strategic locations, particularly in areas with energy supply disruption risk as well as industrial zones, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

P. Prabakaran (PH–Batu) said that BESS will become an important component in ensuring energy security and sustainability, as well as helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

“During the increasingly-rapid phase of transition toward renewable energy, Malaysia cannot continue to rely entirely on traditional generation methods without the support of a strong and resilient energy storage system.

“BESS allows surplus energy, especially solar and wind energy, to be stored and used when demand is high, while also stabilising the electricity grid,” he said during the debate session on the motion of thanks for the royal address today.

Prabakaran also proposed that the government formulate clear regulations and initiatives to encourage investment in energy storage technologies, as well as in the development of local expertise in order to reduce total dependence on foreign technologies.

“In addition, the development of BESS not only ensures energy security but also opens up new economic opportunities through the creation of high-skilled jobs and technology transfer. This is also in line with the nation’s aspirations toward a low-carbon economy and long-term competitiveness.

“BESS is not merely a technical facility, but a strategic investment to safeguard energy security and the future of the nation,” he said.
