Penang Plans Waste To Energy Project At Tasek Gelugor To Address Foul Odour Issues - Chow

06/02/2026 08:30 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- Penang plans to implement a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project as a long-term solution to address foul odour issues caused by pig farming activities in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor, near here.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative is currently being implemented as a pilot project in Valdor,  Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), in collaboration with an environmental company.

He said the area had previously faced severe odour pollution and waste management problems stemming from pig farms, but has since recorded positive results.

“We have seen the success of the Waste-to-Energy project in Valdor after three years of continuous efforts with an environmental company. As a result, odour, gas and pig waste emissions have been brought under better control.

“The project enables pig farm sewage waste to be treated and converted into energy, thereby reducing odour emissions and environmental pollution,” he told reporters after the handing over of mock cheques of the state government’s 2026 allocation to missionary schools at Komtar today.

Chow was responding to media reports that hundreds of residents from several housing estates and villages around Tasek Gelugor had staged a peaceful gathering to protest against pig farming activities in Kampung Selamat, which have been ongoing for more than 40 years and are alleged to have polluted Sungai Kreh.

He added that previous attempts to implement a pilot project with an environmental company at pig farms in Kampung Selamat had failed to produce satisfactory results.

Following this, Chow said the State Executive Council (MMK) meeting decided to adopt the same approach and technology used in Valdor to resolve the issue in Kampung Selamat.

Following this, he said the state government decided to use the same approach and technology as in Valdor to solve the problem.
