SHAH ALAM, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars in Selangor recorded sales of over RM668 million last year, based on data issued by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said a total of 15,000 Ramadan bazaar traders were recorded operating throughout the state last year, thereby forming a significant economic chain and providing spillover benefits to small and medium-sized entrepreneurs.

“Based on DOSM data, the total sales transaction value of Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars in Selangor reached between RM677 million and RM688 million.

“This record proves that the people's economic activities continue to thrive, and the bazaars during Ramadan or Aidilfitri remain an important catalyst for the local economy," he said at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Ramadan Bazaar Trader Kit and Permit Handover Ceremony at the MBSA Convention Centre here today.

Also present at the event were Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi and Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim.

Meanwhile, Mohd Fauzi said MBSA approved a total of 1,283 Ramadan bazaar permits, involving 25 locations in Shah Alam this year, in addition to approving 10 Ramadan bazaar location sites under the auspices of private parties and residents' associations, involving a total of 840 lots.

When met by the media after the event, Amirudin said the state government will implement the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, regarding the cessation of pig farming activities and the construction of illegal places of worship in the state.

Yesterday, Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that he does not consent to pig farming being carried out in any district in Selangor due to the risk of causing pollution that could harm the surrounding residents.

The Sultan’s private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani said that His Royal Highness emphasised that pig farming can cause air pollution by emitting a foul smell and disrupt river water sources due to the release of animal waste and sewage.

In addition, Sultan Sharafuddin also decreed that the issue of constructing places of worship without permission should be stopped and resolved, as it has caused unrest and undermined the peace and harmony of the community.

When asked about the objections from the residents of Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Kurau, Pulau Carey, regarding the Westport Port expansion project, which is alleged to threaten ancestral land and sources of livelihood, Amirudin said the government will review the matter in the Selangor State Executive Council Meeting.

Earlier, the Mah Meri indigenous tribe in Pulau Carey, through a 'surat undangan' (invitation letter) to the media, said that the Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Kurau, which had been gazetted since 1921, is now facing a major threat following the proposed expansion of the port.

They claim that 238 Orang Asli residents have not received transparent negotiations from the developers, even though the project directly affects ancestral land, fishing areas and cultural continuity.

The development is alleged to potentially disrupt the fishing grounds that are the main source of income for the residents, in addition to impacting the Mah Meri wood carving art, which is recognised as a heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.
