Ramanan Disappointed Opposition Did Not Back PM Term Limit Bill

05/03/2026 09:57 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 (Bernama) -- Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has expressed disappointment over the opposition’s decision not to support the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 aimed at limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years.

He said the bill should have received support from all sides to realise the country’s institutional reform agenda.

“All parties should support efforts to advance and develop the nation… support the reforms being implemented by the MADANI Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he told reporters here today.

He said this at a breaking of fast event organised by the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), which was also attended by Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan and PERKESO Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.

On Monday, the bill fell short by two votes to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, with 146 members of parliament voting in favour, 32 absent and 44 abstaining.

The constitutional amendment requires the support of at least two-thirds of the Dewan Rakyat, or 148 MPs, to be passed.

Yesterday, MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also Communications Minister, said the bill will be tabled again in June.

The matter was agreed upon during the Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.

Earlier at the event, Ramanan presented PERKESO corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions totalling more than RM500,000 to individuals and communities in need, with over RM300,000 channelled to 15 recipients under the LINDUNG Pekerja, LINDUNG Kerjaya, LINDUNG Kendiri and LINDUNG Kasih programmes.
