12/03/2026 05:25 PM

CHUKAI, March 12 (Bernama) -- Some 300,000 vehicles are expected to enter Terengganu during the Ops Selamat 26 period, which runs from March 19 to 23, in conjunction with this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said this translates to about 56,000 to 66,000 vehicles entering the state daily during the period.

“These vehicles will enter via federal roads and the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2),” he told reporters after the launch of the Aidilfitri Road Safety Campaign and Advocacy Programme at Sekolah Menengah Agama Al-Falah here today.

The chairman of the Terengganu Road Safety Council (MKJR), Maliaman Kassim, officiated the event.

Mohd Khairi added that leave for 385 traffic police officers and personnel in the state has been frozen to ensure sufficient manpower to manage traffic during the festive period.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khairi said police have identified 20 fatal accident-prone black spots and 23 congestion-prone hotspots across Terengganu.

He said 17 of the black spots are on federal roads and three on state roads.

“Four locations each are in Besut and Marang, followed by three each in Setiu and Kuala Terengganu. Two locations each are in Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman,” he said.

For congestion hotspots, he said five are in Kuala Terengganu and five in Besut, followed by three each in Kemaman, Dungun and Marang, and two each in Setiu and Hulu Terengganu.

On accident statistics, Mohd Khairi said road accidents recorded during Ops Selamat 25 (2025) increased to 376 cases compared with 363 during Ops Selamat 24 (2024).

“However, fatal accidents declined to eight cases in Ops Selamat 25 compared with 11 cases in Ops Selamat 24,” he added.
