PUTRAJAYA, March 31 (Bernama) -- The 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination results recorded the best achievement with a National Grade Average (GPK) index of 4.42 points compared to 4.49 points in 2024.
Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said that a total of 366,435 candidates or 94.29 per cent were eligible to be awarded the SPM certificate in 2025 compared to 355,933 candidates in 2024.
"This figure has shown an increase of 10,502 candidates or 0.28 per cent.
"Millions of congratulations to all teachers whose efforts have been expressed in the form of SPM results," he said in a press conference announcing the 2025 SPM results here today.
Mohd Azam said the analysis of the 2025 SPM examination results showed encouraging achievements of candidates, thus reflecting the effectiveness of the Ministry of Education (MOE)'s continuous efforts in providing access to inclusive and quality education in supporting the aspirations of MADANI Malaysia.
"The Ministry of Education hopes that this result will also reflect the Ministry's ongoing commitment to ensuring that the national assessment system is implemented with integrity, transparency and credibility in line with the Malaysia Education Plan 2026-2035," he said.
He said that of the total 413,299 candidates registered in the 2025 SPM examination, 395,740 candidates were new candidates who registered for at least six subjects.
"The attendance of MOE school candidates was 348,400 from 353,432 while the number of MOE school candidates who did not attend all subjects in SPM 2025 was 5,032 compared to 6,246 in 2024.
"This figure shows a decrease of 1,214 candidates which shows the effectiveness of various initiatives and interventions implemented by MOE and various stakeholders," he said.
Mohd Azam said the number of candidates who obtained excellent results (Grades A+, A and A-) in all subjects taken increased by 3.55 per cent from 13,827 candidates in 2024 to 13,779 candidates in 2025.
"The number who obtained at least a credit or grade C in all subjects was 92,347 candidates in 2025 compared to 86,040 in 2024.
"A total of 141,728 candidates obtained at least a pass or grade E in all subjects taken in 2025 compared to 136,791 in 2024," he said.
He said based on the GPK, the achievement gap between urban and rural candidates has narrowed by 0.04 points.
"The GPK of urban candidates is 4.40 points in 2025 compared to 4.47 points in 2024 while the GPK of rural candidates is 4.81 points in 2025 compared to 4.95 points in 2024," he said.
Touching on subject performance, Mohd Azam said 63 out of 95 subjects have shown an increase in performance, 29 subjects have shown a decrease in performance while three subjects have maintained their performance compared to the 2024 SPM examination based on the Average Subject Grade (GPMP).
He said that for the seven core subjects, three subjects showed an increase in performance while four subjects showed a decrease in performance.
"Pendidikan Islam showed the highest increase in performance by 0.79 points, which is 3.20 points in 2025 compared to 3.99 points in 2024. Bahasa Melayu showed a decrease in performance by 0.13 points, which is 3.85 points in 2025 compared to 3.72 points in 2024," he said.
He said that for the 12 elective subjects in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) , which involve Applied Science and Technology, a total of eight subjects showed an increase in performance.
"Electrical and Electronic Engineering Studies showed the highest performance increase of 1.64 GPMP points, which is 2.01 points in 2025 compared to 3.65 points in 2024.
"Computer Science maintained its performance as in SPM 2024, which was at 3.63 points," he said.
For the 22 STEM elective subjects involving vocational subjects (MPV), he said 16 subjects showed an increase in performance, five subjects showed a decrease in performance while one subject maintained its performance as in SPM 2024.
Mohd Azam said 11 out of 12 elective Humanities and Professional Arts subjects showed an increase in performance while one subject showed a decrease in performance.
"Entrepreneurship Studies showed the highest performance increase of 0.94 points, which is at 2.50 points in 2025 compared to 3.44 points in 2024, while Principles of Accounting showed a decrease in performance of 0.07 points, at 4.00 points in 2025 compared to 3.93 points in 2024," he said.
For the Pengajian Islam elective subjects, nine out of 13 subjects showed an increase in performance while four showed a decrease in performance.
According to him, five out of seven language elective subjects showed an increase in performance while 11 out of 18 Arts Education subjects also recorded the same performance.
